Tips for a Healthy and Fit Life
The decision to get fit and healthy isn’t always easy, but it’s worth the effort in the long run. You’ll not only be happier when you feel good physically, but your self-esteem will skyrocket when you look in the mirror and see that you have been working hard to achieve your goals. These fitness tips will help you stay on track to accomplish your health and fitness goals this year.
When starting a new diet/exercise plan, cut back gradually
Your body will go through withdrawal symptoms when you cut back on certain foods or stop exercising. Withdrawal symptoms such as headaches, irritability, etc. will only worsen the more you push yourself. To minimize these feelings, cut back gradually so your body has time to adjust to each change before moving on to the next. It is also important to get enough sleep, drink plenty of water and eat balanced meals with healthy portions of protein, carbs, and fat. As with any diet/exercise plan, it is best not to expect immediate results but instead take it one day at a time.
Spend time doing low-impact activities
Exercising is important to maintain your health, but not all workouts are created equal. Low-impact activities are great because they're gentle on the joints and can help those who want to exercise more. Plus, low-impact exercises don't require any special equipment and the only skill you need is to know how to perform them. Examples of low-impact exercises include walking, cycling, yoga, swimming, or tai chi. The best part about these types of exercises is that you can do them anytime or anywhere!
Get enough sleep
One of the most important things you can do to maintain a healthy lifestyle is to get enough sleep. Aside from being important for general well-being, your body will repair itself while you sleep. So if you're not getting enough hours in, it's going to show on your health as well as your daily demeanor. Try setting an alarm for 7-8 hours at night and following that with a nap during the day. If that doesn't work out, experiment with how many hours of sleep you need to feel refreshed.
Do what works for you
We all need to take care of ourselves to achieve our best. Whether it's small changes or big ones, anything is worth the effort! You'll feel better, have more energy, and be able to enjoy life more fully.
The key is finding what works for you: whether that means taking on a fitness challenge or simply cutting back on your sugar intake. Remember that you're the only one who can decide what your needs are- don't compare yourself to others! Be gentle with yourself as you work towards reaching your goals.
Don’t be afraid to ask people for help
Often people are too shy to ask for help in things they don't know how to do, but here's the thing: it's better to know when you need help than be unable to take care of yourself. It doesn't make you seem dumb, or less intelligent; it just means that there are some things that we all have to work on. There's nothing wrong with asking someone who knows how something works or is done if you're struggling with something!
Eat whole foods
Eating whole foods can have many benefits, such as relieving the body of toxins. The best way to avoid eating processed food is to cook at home and find recipes that are balanced in their ratio of protein, carbs, and fat. It's also important to drink water throughout the day!
What are whole foods?
Whole foods are the least processed form of food. This includes fruits, vegetables, beans, dairy products like yogurt or kefir, fish like salmon or cod, chicken with skin on (or pasture-raised pork), eggs, grains like oatmeal or barley, nuts, and seeds. Whole foods are in their most natural state with little to no processing. These are not only healthy for you but also better for the environment because they do not require large amounts of resources such as energy and water when being produced. However, whole foods may be more expensive than other types of food. To save money when buying whole foods it is important to buy from less expensive sources.
Exercise regularly
Start slow. Exercising is great, but it can be challenging to commit to at first. Start with something simple, like walking around the block a few times per day. You can also try exercising for 10 minutes each day or doing some basic stretches before going to bed. Gradually add more time as you get more comfortable with your routine until you're able to work out for at least 20 minutes every day. Find an activity that suits your personality: If you have a competitive streak, look into sports. If music gets you pumped up, find a group of friends who want to take drum lessons together. And if yoga makes you feel centered and relaxed, why not give it a shot?
Set achievable goals & targets
The best way to achieve your goal is by setting goals that are achievable, not too overwhelming, and giving you some room to slack off. Here are three steps to help you set your goals:
Set five simple things that would make the day a success; these could be anything from getting out of bed on time to eating breakfast or working out. Pick two of those five items that you want to focus on for the week ahead, then list two possible rewards (think about what motivates you) if you accomplish them. Finally, create a game plan for how you'll accomplish each of those tasks (e.g., what time will I wake up?
Make exercise fun
Keep your workouts exciting by switching up your routine, whether that means going for a jog in the rain or dancing with abandon to some salsa music. Choose an activity that suits your mood and make it into something you want to do instead of something you have to do. It will be easier to stick with your routine if you are looking forward to what's coming next. Plus, changing things up can help stave off boredom and motivate you further.
One way to enjoy exercising is through outdoor adventures like camping or hiking.
